The Freebie

Darren (Dax Shepard) and Annie (Katie Aselton) have an enviable relationship built on love, trust and communication-they still enjoy each other's company and laugh at each other's jokes. Unfortunately, they can't remember the last time they had sex. When a dinner party conversation leads to an honest discussion about the state of their love life, and when a sexy bikini photo shoot leads to crossword puzzles instead of sex, they begin to flirt with an idea for a way to spice things up.

The deal: one night of freedom, no strings attached, no questions asked. Could a "freebie" be the cure for their ailing sex life? And will they go through with it? THE FREEBIE is an insightful and humorous look at love, sustaining relationships, and the awkwardness of monogamy when the haze of lust has faded. The film was produced by Adele Romanski and executive produced by Aselton and CYRUS director Mark Duplass.

Asheville Film to Premeire at Venice Film Festival

"Road to Nowhere," the independent motion picture filmed last year in Western North Carolina, will premiere at the prestigious Venice Film Festival in Italy, which is scheduled September 1-11. The film is one of 19 selected to represent the United States, along with others by such notable directors as Martin Scorsese, Sofia Coppola, Ben Affleck and the late Dennis Hopper.

"Road to Nowhere" was directed by indie film guru Monte Hellman, and written and produced by Steven Gaydos. It stars Dominique Swain (“JAG,” “Ghost Whisperer”), Shannyn Sossamon (“How to Make it in America,” “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit”), Tygh Runyan (“Battlestar Galactica,” “SGU Stargate Universe”), and Cliff De Young (“The Young and the Restless,” “Grey’s Anatomy”).

“Road to Nowhere” is described as a romance-thriller about a young filmmaker who gets wrapped up in a crime while shooting his latest project on location. The real filmmakers spent two months last year shooting in several areas of North Carolina, including Jackson, Graham, Buncombe, Haywood, and Swain Counties, the cities of Waynesville, Asheville and Bryson City, and at Fontana Lake.

“Filming in Western North Carolina was a wonderful experience,” said co-producer Peter R.J. Deyell, who is based in Los Angeles. “We were welcomed by friendly communities and had enormous cooperation by local business, government, and law enforcement. We hired very professional local crew members and were supported by film students from Western Carolina University.”

Locations included Fontana Lake and Fontana Dam, for which the filmmakers were required to obtain special permits from The Tennessee Valley Authority. The Federal Aviation Administration granted permission for the filmmakers to fly a small airplane over Fontana Dam. And the Great Smoky Mountains National Park allowed the company to shoot the actual Road to Nowhere and the tunnel at its end, specific locations that director Monte Hellman wanted, as described in the script.

“The level of cooperation we received was exceptional,” Deyell said. “I look forward to working in North Carolina again, when I shoot my next feature, ‘Blood Lake,’ in 2011.”

Indie Pick O' The Day: Prince Of Broadway

Lee Daniels presents a film directed by Sean Baker where a hustler named Lucky isn't so lucky when he unexpectedly finds out he has a son he never knew about and now is forced to raise him.  Lucky had a brief intimate encounter with a woman who now tells him he has son.

Lucky is an illegal immigrant from Ghana who works for a Lebanese immigrant that owns a storefront that has a backdoor that contains counterfeit designer bags and shoes.  Lucky's hustle is to get people into the store to buy those very counterfeit items.  Lucky is good at his game, but then loses his mojo after his new found son with no name comes into his life.

Lucky now deals with raising his son, and convincing his girlfriend Karina to stay with him and help him to raise his new son.  It's a daunting task at first for Lucky who is so ready to give up and abandon his son, but he soon comes to realize how much emotion this young child stirs in his life.  Who decides to name Prince.  He also remembers how his father was always there for him.  Lucky questions whether or not this child is his, for Linda the mother of Prince, is someone who is easy and could have a number of prospects of men who could be the father.  Therefore, Lucky decides to get a DNA test to see if he is the father.

Prince of Broadway is a poignant film about fatherhood and what one is willing to sacrifice for the life of another.  It's a beautiful film that tells the story of a hustler that essentially gets hustled, but in the end learns a lesson that changes his life.

Prince of Broadway won the Grand Jury Prize at the Los Angeles Film Festival and was nominated for the John Cassavetes Award at the Independent Spirit Awards.

Sinners & Saints Screening in Charlotte

Evan Karagias, actor, pro-wrestler, and celebrity tax advisor, announces that he will make a personal appearance on Tuesday, September 14th, 2010, for the 7:15 PM East Coast Movie Premiere Screening at EpiCentre Theaters, Charlotte, NC, for the crime action thriller "SINNERS & SAINTS" (2010).

The feature film is directed by William Kaufman, known for his surprise DVD hit, "The Prodigy" (2005). It is co-produced by Hollywood's Noir Blanc Films, under Producers Ron Balicki and Mark Andrew Clark, and by Charlotte's own Carolina Film Works, under Executive Producer and actor Leon Dunn, who makes his first film appearance in this movie.

In "Sinners & Saints," Evan Karagias appears in the supporting role of "Lynch," a private contractor and former military operative assigned to the recovery of a stolen videotape, which is the only evidence to an atrocity in Iraq covered up by US Army officers and shady defense contractors, a tape now lost on the 9th Ward streets of post-Katrina New Orleans, Louisiana.

The videotape is also hotly pursued by the troubled New Orleans Police Detective Sean Riley, played by Johnny Strong, known for his role in "Fast and the Furious" (2001), and by his new, by-the-book, partner, Detective Will Ganz, played by Kevin Phillips, who was last seen in "Notorious" (2009).

Playing Detective Riley's love interest, Stacy, is played by the intense actress Jolene Blalock, best known for playing T'Pol, the Vulcan Science Officer, on the Paramount TV series "Star Trek: Enterprise" (2005).

Also featured in the cast are Sean Patrick Flanery from Lifetime Network's "Army Wives," the Oscar-nominated Tom Berenger, brothers Costas and Louis Mandylor, Kim Coates, Jürgen Prochnow, as the evil "Mr. Rhykin," and Evan's personal friends, actor/pro-wrestlers Bas Rutten and Holt Boggs. Appearing in first-time acting roles are musicians and composers Method Man and Jake La Botz.

With stunts and fights directed by producer and martial artist Ron Balicki, the movie has attention grabbing action scenes. Evan Karagias assisted Ron by providing stunt choreography for several fights and by performing his own dangerous live stunts -- without a stunt double. The producers noted Evan Karagias's extraordinary efforts towards the making of the movie with a "Special Thanks" acknowledgment in the closing credits.

"Sinners & Saints" has a run-time of 150 minutes and is Rated-R by the MPAA for content including Adult Themes, Adult Language, and Strong Violence: Children under the age of 17 must be accompanied by a parent or an adult guardian to be admitted to any screening of this movie.

Advance tickets are now on sale for this East Coast Premiere VIP Screening at the EpiCentre Theaters box office in Charlotte, NC.

MADE IN DAGENHAM

Thursday, August 26th marks the 90th Anniversary of the

19th Amendment guaranteeing American women the Right to Vote...

A first step in the long history of pioneering women all over the world taking up the mantle of Women’s Equality…

From Title IX to Equal Pay and beyond…

Next month, the new film MADE IN DAGENHAM, which stars Golden Globe winner Sally Hawkins and celebrates the real women who fought for the passage of an Equal Pay law in the UK,

World Premieres at the Toronto International Film Festival.

These Dagenham women are available for commentary on the anniversary of the 19th amendment and their own roles in the living history of the women’s movement.

Made In Dagenham opens in theaters November 19th.

Directed by

Nigel Cole (“Kinky Boots”)

Starring

Sally Hawkins, Bob Hoskins, Miranda Richardson, Rosamund Pike, Geraldine James, Rupert Graves, Jaime Winstone, Andrea Riseborough, Daniel Mays & Richard Schiff.

Synopsis

Set against the backdrop of the 1960s, Made in Dagenham is based on a true story about a group of spirited women who joined forces, took a stand for what was right, and in doing so, found their own inner strength.

Although far from the Swinging Sixties of Carnaby Street, life for the women of Dagenham, England is tinged with the sounds and sights of the optimistic era, heard on their radios and seen on their TV sets. Rita O’Grady (Sally Hawkins) reflects that upbeat era, along with her friends and co-workers at the city's Ford Motor Factory -- Sandra (Jamie Winstone), Eileen (Nicola Duffett), Brenda (Andrea Riseborough), Monica (Lorraine Stanley) and Connie (Geraldine James) -- who laugh in the face of their poor conditions. Lisa (Rosamund Pike) is a fiercely intelligent Cambridge-educated woman who feels a bit trapped, tending to the home with a husband that suggests she keep her opinions to herself. She may not live in the same world as the other women, but she shares their views. No one thought the revolution would come to Dagenham, until one day, it did.

Rita, who primarily sees herself as a wife and mother, is coerced into attending a meeting with shop steward Connie, sympathetic union representative Albert (Bob Hoskins) and Peter Hopkins (Rupert Graves), Ford’s Head of Industrial Relations. What she expects to be simply a day out of work, complete with a free lunch, turns into much more when she and her colleagues become outraged by the lack of respect shown in the meeting to the women employees.

With humor, common sense and courage Rita and the other women take on their bosses, an increasingly belligerent local community, and finally the government, as their intelligence and unpredictability proves to be a match for any of their male opponents. Daring to stand up and push boundaries, the women changed a system that no one wanted to admit was broken.

Hatchet II: Released unrated nationwide October 1st

Dark Sky Films, a division of MPI Media Group, announced today that in anticipation of the upcoming Halloween horror movie season, Adam Green's HATCHET II will be distributed in theaters across the country beginning Oct 1. The film will be released without an MPAA rating, marking the widest release of an unrated genre film in more than 25 years.

AMC Theatres, under its AMC independent program, will be exhibiting HATCHET II in the top 20 markets across the country. Vitagraph Films is serving as theatrical distributor.

The announcement regarding the HATCHET II release was made jointly by Adam Green with MPI Media Group's Senior Vice President of Acquisitions Greg Newman.

A ferociously fun tribute to the old-school horror sensation slasher movies of the 80's, HATCHET II is the follow-up to the popular original film, which was released theatrically in 2007 and became a sleeper-hit, gaining a wide following on DVD. The cast of HATCHET II features a cavalcade of horror movie icons including Danielle Harris (HALLOWEEN) and Kane Hodder (FRIDAY THE 13th), reprising his role as serial killer Victor Crowley. Also starring are Tony Todd (CANDYMAN) and R.A. Mihailoff (TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE).

HATCHET II is having its world premiere this week in London at Fright Fest, the UK's premiere horror and fantasy film festival.

Director Adam Green said, "Having a movie as graphically over the top as HATCHET II come out in major theatres unrated is an absolute dream come true -- not only for the genre fans but for the entire make-up effects crew who normally have to watch their amazing achievements get sliced and diced for theatrical release. This is an important event for the horror genre and I hope the real horror fans support HATCHET II and help change the way genre films are released theatrically from this day forward. Kudos to Dark Sky Films and AMC theaters for truly honoring the spirit of old school American horror and doing this right. Gorehounds won't know what hit them!"

Dark Sky Films' Newman added, "We are thrilled that audiences will not have to wait for a director's cut or unrated version of Adam Green's HATCHET II. On October 1st fans will have the opportunity to see Hatchet II in theaters exactly as it was intended to be seen: full-on, uncut and uncensored! We hope that this unrated release of HATCHET II marks a new trend in providing an uncompromised theatrical experience for genre film lovers nationwide."

"Our AMC independent program embraces diverse storytelling of all types," said AMC Theatres' Vice President, Specialty & Alternative Content, Nikkole Dneson-Randolph. "Bringing a story like HATCHET II to our guests is a natural fit during this time of year and we're excited to share the filmmakers' vision on-screen in its intended state."

HIFF MC is Marcia Gay Harden

A stellar line-up of talent, including Marcia Gay Harden, Frances McDormand, Joel and Ethan Coen and John Turturro will fete Ben Barenholtz at The Hamptons International Film Festival / IndieWIRE Industry Toast on Saturday, October 9th during the festival. The festival will also present a special 20th anniversary screening of “Miller’s Crossing” the first film Barenholtz executive produced and Marcia Gay Harden’s first film, on Sunday, October 10th.

A revered figure among independent filmmakers, Barenholtz has been a key presence in the independent film world as an exhibitor, distributor, and producer since the late 1960s when he owned and operated New York City’s Elgin Theatre.

Ben Barenholtz’s innovative approach to the Elgin’s programming made it among the world’s most visionary and historically significant art houses. Barenholtz was the originator of the All Night Show of movies from dusk until dawn as well as the “Midnight Movie” with Alexander Jodorowsky’s “El Topo” followed by John Water’s “Pink Flamingos”. At the Elgin, Barenholtz relaunched the films of Buster Keaton and all the while discovering independent films by young American directors working outside the mainstream. As a distributor, he released many seminal debut films from directors such as David Lynch, John Sayles, Guy Maddin and Joel and Ethan Coen, as well as award winning foreign films such as Tacchella’s “Cousin cousine”. His producing record also includes the Coen’s Cannes triple crown award winner, “Barton Fink”, among many others.

“We are thrilled to be able to bring together such great talent to celebrate Ben and his achievements at this years’ festival. He’s had a great and lasting impact on our world of independent film – with more to come - and this celebration clearly shows how the community feels about him.” says The Hamptons International Film Festival Executive Director, Karen Arikian.

"Ben has been and remains a dynamic, key figure in the American indie scene," says indieWIRE Editor-in-Chief and Co-Founder Eugene Hernandez. "Joel and Ethan Coen, Frances McDormand, Marcia Gay Harden and the many others coming to the Hamptons to salute Ben are a testament to the major influence he's had on the community. It's an honor for us at indieWIRE to partner with HIFF and celebrate this icon," adds Hernandez.

The Industry Toast has honored those people who have played a significant role in the independent industry over the years. Past recipients have included Marcie Bloom, Bob Berney, Ted Hope and Wouter Barendrecht.

HIFF greatly appreciates the support of German Films for this event, as well as the on-going support from their corporate sponsors, which include Altour International, American Airlines among many others.

SEEN O' The Day: Waking Life

"I don't wanna be an ant, ya know?"

Richard Linklater's animated film about the human condition is a great character piece.   This scene is about how each of us in our daily mundane lives seem to feel content with being on "zombie auto-pilot" so to speak, rather than have real human interaction with other people.

It's a pretty cool scene and also speaks to living life based on moments and experiences rather than just living life to get by...

Indie Pick O' The Day: Restaurant

A 1998 independent film about young waiters working at a New Jersey restaurant waiting for their opportunity to break into the entertainment industry.  Chris (played by Adrien Brody) is a bartender who is also a struggling playwright dealing with a string of failed relationships and decides to give it one more shot with a fellow waitress who works at the restaurant (played by Elise Neal).

However, when Chris writes a play about his former love (played by Lauryn Hill) he finds out that the actor playing her love interest is actually sleeping with her in real life which just adds to more confusion about his attachment to his ex and his new relationship with Jeanine.

The film deals with struggles from issues of finding one's own identity to struggles with substance abuse.  It was the stand out film at the L.A. Independent Film Festival in 1998, and is one of Brody's best earlier works to date.  Take a look at the trailer below:

Storied Life Films LLC

An Asheville-based, life-story-film company is launching a community service film project and inviting Western North Carolina residents, including residents of the Qualla Boundary, to participate as recording recipients or sponsors … hopeful the project will ultimately spur support for the creation of a separate, nonprofit film foundation.

Through its business, Storied Life Films, LLC captures and preserves the personal life stories of grandmothers, fathers, and others … traveling to clients’ homes; setting up professional-quality video, audio and lighting equipment; casually interviewing clients; and delivering the basic recording, or edited film, on DVD.

Through its community film project, “Stories to Tell & Voices to Keep,” Storied Life Films, LLC will produce 12 free, basic recorded interviews and 12 half-cost, basic recorded interviews, throughout the next year, for Western North Carolinians diagnosed with a terminal illness – or a serious, potentially life-threatening illness, including Alzheimer’s disease, cancer, organ failure and other illnesses – who would otherwise be unable to fund a recording.

“Whether interviewing someone who is ill or healthy, our goal and tone will not vary,” said company founder, Beth Ledbetter Chester, a former reporter.

“We want to evoke and capture the sparkle in a father’s eyes, the heartiness of a grandfather’s laugh, and the unique gestures of a mother’s hand, while helping our subjects recount the stories of their lives … the joys and struggles; successes and failures; and nuggets of wisdom to be gleaned from their journeys.”

Additional recordings have already been sponsored by the project’s initial Founding Sponsors, including:

•12 Bones Smokehouse, Asheville, one full-cost recording and one half-cost recording;

•The Corner Kitchen, Asheville, one full-cost recording in memory of Grace Lackey, formerly of Asheville;

• Freeman’s Mini Storage, Swannanoa, the project’s first official sponsor, one half-cost recording in honor of Lynne Freeman’s mother, Sara Capps, 85, Asheville, a lung cancer survivor; and

• Farm Bureau Insurance of Asheville, one half-cost recording.

Storied Life Films, LLC is hopeful the project will grow during its inaugural year, making free and low-cost recorded interviews available to many more Western North Carolinians facing serious illness.

To encourage participation, the company is reducing project recording fees by $100, almost 25%, and inviting other businesses, organizations and individuals to sponsor additional recordings.

Founding sponsors will be recognized on the project’s web page, at www.storiedlifefilms.com throughout the project’s first year, ending August 24, 2011, under the heading, “Our Community Service Film Project.”

Sponsors may choose to specify the county of residence and specific illness of recipients.

“Someone who has experienced lung cancer, breast cancer, Alzheimer’s disease or other illnesses in the family might prefer to sponsor a recording for someone struggling with the same challenge,” said Chester,” and make that sponsorship in honor, or in memory, of the sponsor’s loved one.”

Honorarium information will be included on the project web page and a recording credits page.

Encouraging individuals to participate, the first four who sponsor as individuals, couples, or family units, with $350, full-cost recording sponsorships, will receive dinner certificates for two at The Corner Kitchen in Asheville, valued at $75.

The project also welcomes half-cost recording sponsorships at $175. Half-cost sponsors determine whether their gift may be combined with another, creating one full-cost recording, and allowing the recipient to pay only sales tax and travel, based upon mileage from Asheville.

Sponsors may choose to forward half of their sponsorship funds to the WNC church of their choice, for safe keeping until recording completion, but must first obtain project documents which must be agreed to and signed by all parties before opting to involve a third party.

Residents of Western North Carolina’s twelve most western counties, including residents of the Qualla Boundary, with an eastern line of Yancey, Buncombe, and Henderson counties, who meet project criteria, are invited to register for recordings.

Recordings will be awarded through multiple random drawings during the project’s first year, with the first drawing August 31, and a registration deadline of 6 p.m., August 30. At least 25% of sponsorships received by August 30 will be awarded in the first drawing.

Individuals with a life expectancy of three years or less, and certain Alzheimer’s, and similarly affected patients, will be given preferential treatment in otherwise random drawings. However, all diagnosed with a potentially life-threatening illness, as defined by the project, who are unable to fund this service, are encouraged to register … including cancer patients successfully treated with surgery, chemotherapy, etc., while continuing to be at significant risk.

Potential recording recipients and sponsors should visit the project web page, or contact Storied Life Films, LLC, for specific details and definitions. Project sponsorships are not tax deductible, since the company is not a nonprofit, tax-exempt organization.

By October, the company’s founder is hopeful its community service film project will have generated support toward the eventual creation of a separate, nonprofit film foundation, governed by a board of directors.

“My hope is that a nonprofit film foundation would guarantee more extensive, edited films for young, terminally ill patients under the age of 30 … as well as financially indigent, terminal patients with children under the age of 23,” she said.

“Ultimately, I envision a network of university film and journalism students, as well as recent graduates – serving as interns, paid and unpaid apprentices, volunteers, and traditional paid staff – allowing the foundation to provide this gift across the country.”

Through the business, its community film project, and her hope for the creation of a nonprofit film foundation, Chester’s goal is to launch a movement, she said, “helping everyone understand how important it is to capture the essence and the stories of their loved ones’ lives in quality images and sound, no matter how ordinary those lives may seem.”

It’s a desire rooted in the sudden death of her father in 2006 and an interview she and her husband had recorded with him six years earlier, as he was seated in his living room chair, long before his lung cancer diagnosis.

For more information on becoming a recording recipient or sponsor through Storied Life Films, LLC’s August launch of its community service film project, “Stories to Tell & Voices to Keep,” contact the company at 828-989-3966; by email to beth@storiedlifefilms.com; or by mail to P.O. Box 18012, Asheville, NC 28814.

Asheville Food & Environmental Film Festival

“I thought the film festival would be a great platform to show what already is happening in our community, and also give people who have no clue what's going on ideas about how they can get involved,” Gray said.

The Asheville Food and Environmental Film Festival is scheduled for Sept. 22-25 in a variety of venues, including a farm north of Asheville, UNC Asheville and, in true Asheville style, several local breweries.

Locally grown food and having a conscious eye on the environment is now setting a new trend for a film festival.

A documentary called “Fresh” inspired Gray to take action (not the Samuel L. Jackson film). The film highlights farmers, business people and others who are changing the way food is grown and distributed, all with an eye toward growing healthier food which is more environmentally friendly. Another great documentary on produce awareness is Food Inc.

The moviemakers allow the film to be shown after someone like Gray organizes a community screening, “so they're creating a movement,” she says. She set up two showings of “Fresh” in March at Carolina Cinemas, and hosted another film in May at the Lexington Avenue Brewery that celebrated urban chickens.

The September film festival will include another showing of “Fresh,” as well as panel discussions and the launch of a slow food group for UNCA students. The aim is to foster collaboration among the groups already working in sustainable agriculture, and expose the ideas to more people.

Lee Daniels Presents: PRINCE OF BROADWAY

Prince of Broadway is the story of Lucky and Levon, two men whose lives converge in the underbelly of New York's wholesale fashion district. Lucky, an illegal immigrant from Ghana, makes ends meet by soliciting shoppers on the street with knock-off brand merchandise. Levon, an Armenian-Lebanese immigrant, operates an illegal storefront with a concealed back room where counterfeit goods are showcased to interested shoppers. Lucky's world is suddenly turned upside down when a child is thrust into his life by a woman who insists the toddler is his son. While Lucky copes with his new domestic dilemma, Levon struggles to save a marriage that is falling apart. The seedy side of the wholesale district is revealed through a journey that continually confronts the interplay between what is fake and what is real.

Set in the shadow of the Flatiron building and soaked in the colorful bustle of Broadway, the film is as much a brutal drama as it is a tender comedy. Shot in a fast-paced guerilla style that is akin to the hustler lifestyle, the film reveals the lives of immigrants in America seeking ideals of family and love, while creating their own knock-off of the American Dream.

If You're In New York...

The Hamptons International Film Festival (HIFF), working in association with Guild Hall, concludes it’s three-part “Summer Docs” series with a screening of The Last Play at Shea. The film will screen at Guild Hall in East Hampton on Saturday, September 4th at 8:00pm

Returning “SummerDocs” host Alec Baldwin will introduce the film and participate in a question and answer session with music legend Billy Joel immediately following a screening of the film.

“What a great way to celebrate the last in the “SummerDocs” series with a film about a Long Island native Billy Joel and the New York Mets” says Hamptons International Film Festival Executive Director Karen Arikian. “The second year of this series proved a huge success and we are looking forward to this years’ film festival to continue to bring the community great films.” Director of Programming, David Nugent, adds “We are thrilled to have the music legend Billy Joel participate in our program and discuss his history with Shea Stadium.”

The intersecting histories of a landmark stadium, a volatile baseball team, and a music legend are examined in a film that charts the ups and downs of the New York Mets and the life and career of Long Island native Billy Joel. Directed by Paul Crowder, the film is set against the backdrop of New York City, early 60s to present, and the soundtrack of Joel's final Shea concerts in 2008. The Last Play At Shea, weaves interviews with players and performers with exclusive concert footage—featuring special guests Paul McCartney, Tony Bennett, Garth Brooks, John Mayer and Roger Daltrey, among others. Long time Joel friend and former band mate, Jon Small, directed the concert footage, filmed at each of Joel’s sold out Shea Stadium Shows. The shows staged on July 16 and July 18, 2008, before a combined 110,000 fans, were the last performances ever to play the historic stadium. Steve Cohen and Nigel Sinclair produce The Last Play At Shea, in conjunction with Billy Joel’s Maritime Pictures and Spitfire Films.

HIFF greatly appreciates the continued support from their corporate sponsors, which include Altour International, American Airlines, Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher LLP, Champagne Nicolas Feuillatte, RoC and Silvercup Studios.

Tickets for the screening are available purchase at www.guildhall.org or at the Guild Hall Box Office.

The 18th Annual Hamptons International Film Festival will now take place over Columbus Day Weekend, October 7th – 11th.

Aaron Sorkin Explores THE SOCIAL NETWORK

How Facebook was invented may not seem like Hollywood fare - that is, until you hear the story.

The West Wing creator and A Few Good Men screenwriter Aaron Sorkin brings the tale of backstabbing and betrayal to the big screen.

Directed by David Fincher, this is sure to be one of the year's best releases, and we have Sorkin taking us through the writing of the film - a process that differed greatly for him than anything he's done before.

Whatever Happened To Ryan Gosling?

I've never seen The Notebook.  I know.  That's bad right?  An alleged film connoisseur who writes a blog about films and never has seen The Notebook.  But I must admit, I've seen just about every other Ryan Gosling film made.

My favorite is the film Half Nelson where he plays the crack-addicted school teacher who begins an unlikely friendship with one of his students.  I also loved his work in United States of Leland where he had the opportunity to work with the likes of Kevin Spacey and Don Cheadle.  Or what about The Believer where he plays a Jewish guy who becomes a member of the KKK...what a great film!  I even remember that horrid Sandra Bullock film Murder By Numbers, which is a film I would rather forget.

However, I have a question....whatever happened to Ryan Gosling?  It appears after he broke up with Rachel Mcadams he just sort of fell off the planet.  Or did he?  Well when in doubt...IMDB it!  So I looked him up and I see that after 2007 he basically stopped working.  It appears he has some projects in the works this year and a film completed called Blue Valentine.  Shew!  I got scared, I thought I would never see him on celluloid again.  I love this guy's work!

Perhaps this weekend I'll need to make the effort to watch The Notebook.  Ryan would have wanted it that way right?  Ryan where ever you are, I just want to say please come back!  It's good to know you're actively working and you haven't forgotten about Hollywood.

That Shia Lebeouf kid is taking over your roles....get back in there!

SEEN' O The Day: The Salton Sea

The Salton Sea is an intense film that asks the question,  "how far one would go to venge the death of a loved one?"  Val Kilmer plays Danny Parker who goes undercover to find the men that killed his wife.  He plays the role of a drug dealer.

In the clip below Danny and his partner Jimmy the Finn (who has no idea Danny is undercover) scores from a local low-end dealer.  The scene is funny and sad all at the same time.  The effects of drugs and the danger Danny is willing to put himself in, to find the men who took away his only love.

What I really dig about this scene is the subtextual contrast of the lovely angelic vocals of Minnie Riperton's "Loving You" playing in the background along with the intensity of this scene.  Classic!

Warning:  This clip may be a bit disturbing to some

Recut: Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory

Trailer Trash is a collection of recut movie trailers primarily on YouTube from innovative editors putting their own creative spin on how the trailer REALLY should have been cut.

Here is the children's classic Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory recut as a dark, hallucinogenic thriller slash morality tale.

Great editing job!

IndieSeen Favorite: Joe Pantoliano

This guy has been in sooo many movies.  The first time I saw Joe Pantoliano was as the tough captain always having something to bitch about in the movie Bad Boys.  I liked his Jersey accent and his suave demeanor.  The movie Bad Boys is only one in a string of movies he's been in.  Just pull up his IMDB profile, he's been in 128 films!  It's shocking to know this guy once studied to become a barber.....glad he dropped that day job!

I saw this quirky indie film called Second Best, where Pantoliano plays Elliot, a struggling screenwriter awaiting the home coming of his best friend who just so happens to be a Hollywood producer.  After wathcing the movie, I thought about how much I've admired his body of work.  From mainstream films like The Matrix to indie classics like Memento.  Outside of film he's remembered most for his work on the Emmy Award winning HBO hit The Sopranos

He seems to always plays the shady sleazebag type of characters.  Like the character of Caesar in Bound or one of the Fratelli brothers in The Goonies.  However, you gotta love this guy is every role he plays.  Although Joe is pretty famous in his own right, he's still considered to be a character actor, which I think best fits him.

Joe is currently filming the movie Loosies starring Peter Facinelli and Michael Madsen.  The flick is about a young pickpocket in the New York subways, living a fast, free, lifestyle is confronted by a woman whom he had a one night affair with, she informs him that she is now pregnant with his child.  Good stuff.

P.S.  I also like his signature kangol hat style!

Here's a trailer of the movie I watched this weekend Second Best that made me think of how much I admire Joe...

Indie Pick O' The Day: Paper Heart

A whimsical film about a girl named Charlene who documents on film with her friends about a subject matter that she doesn't quite get...the four letter word.  LOVE.  Micheal Cera becomes the object of her affection and the two go on a cross-country journey together to not only discover themselves, but also understand the perspectives of others' points of view on the issue of romance.

They meet with happily married couples, chemists, romance novelists, divorce lawyers, groups of children and more as Charlene tries to pin point what is love and what is it about this raw emotion that triggers reactions among so many people.  However, Charlene's affection to Micheal that grows during the course of the film gives her an eye opening perspective on the answer that she has been searching for.
