Indie Pick O' The Day: Prince Of Broadway

Lee Daniels presents a film directed by Sean Baker where a hustler named Lucky isn't so lucky when he unexpectedly finds out he has a son he never knew about and now is forced to raise him.  Lucky had a brief intimate encounter with a woman who now tells him he has son.

Lucky is an illegal immigrant from Ghana who works for a Lebanese immigrant that owns a storefront that has a backdoor that contains counterfeit designer bags and shoes.  Lucky's hustle is to get people into the store to buy those very counterfeit items.  Lucky is good at his game, but then loses his mojo after his new found son with no name comes into his life.

Lucky now deals with raising his son, and convincing his girlfriend Karina to stay with him and help him to raise his new son.  It's a daunting task at first for Lucky who is so ready to give up and abandon his son, but he soon comes to realize how much emotion this young child stirs in his life.  Who decides to name Prince.  He also remembers how his father was always there for him.  Lucky questions whether or not this child is his, for Linda the mother of Prince, is someone who is easy and could have a number of prospects of men who could be the father.  Therefore, Lucky decides to get a DNA test to see if he is the father.

Prince of Broadway is a poignant film about fatherhood and what one is willing to sacrifice for the life of another.  It's a beautiful film that tells the story of a hustler that essentially gets hustled, but in the end learns a lesson that changes his life.

Prince of Broadway won the Grand Jury Prize at the Los Angeles Film Festival and was nominated for the John Cassavetes Award at the Independent Spirit Awards.
